Biocompatibility
The biocompatibility of all thermoforming materials is proven. They correspond to the Medical Products Directive 93/42/EEC with modifications to Directive 2007/47/EC (medical products class 1) and are CE marked.
To date (2019) only two suspected cases of an allergic reaction to these materials have been reported, but allergic reactions cannot be excluded.

Choosing the Appropriate Material Thickness
To choose the appropriate thickness of the material, it must be taken into account that the thermoforming material loses 20 to 25% of its initial thickness when forming a model area of 1cm in height, for 2cm in height the loss is from 30 to 40%.
The thickness of the material for occlusal splints is chosen in accordance with the desired verticalization, allowing as much as possible running-in without additional adjustment.

Lamination
For devices without time or temperature control

For most materials, proceed as follows: Test the degree of flexibility with an obtuse instrument. Thermoform if you notice the presence of lasting impressions.

Cleaning and maintenance instructions
Devices (gutters) made of thermoforming materials must be cleaned as follows:
Detergents: soap, neutral soap, liquid soap and dishwashing liquid. Do not use scented soaps. Do not use toothpaste (contains abrasive particles), mouthwashes (may cause color change) and water at a temperature above 50°C (deformation). Solvent-based cleaning products cause delamination of multi-layered gutters.

After use:

  • rinse well with water
  • Carefully clean the inside and outside of the gutter using a toothbrush and soap.
  • rinse well with water
  • shake the device or dry with a towel
  • never dry using a hairdryer: risk of deformation!
  • It is very important to allow the device to dry completely. Store in a dry place, preferably in a box with ventilation holes.
  • Before use, rinse with water once again.

Formation of odors
If over time the tray has taken on a strong odor, immerse it for an hour in a concentrated, unscented soap solution.
Then rinse thoroughly with water, this cleaning eliminates most of the bacteria causing the formation of odors.

Color change
Soft thermoforming materials tend to bleed. The intake of colored pigments can be reduced but never completely avoided. Mouthwashes and amalgam fillings can also cause color changes.

Disinfection
All thermoforming materials except Erkoloc-pro/blu/green/pink can be disinfected with disinfectant alcohol or other commercial liquids. Erkoloc-pro/blu/green/pink materials should be kept dry and air dry for 5 hours after contact with alcohol for it to evaporate completely. Otherwise, the combination of hard and soft layers is no longer guaranteed.

Sterilization
Sterilization with gas and plasma (<50°C) is possible. The materials are not autoclavable due to thermoinstability.

Pre-drying
For materials that are not delivered or kept in sealed foil pouches:
Erkodur:
0.5 - 2.0mm, 5H 60°C
2.5 - 5.0mm, 8H 60°C

Erkoloc-pro:
1.0 - 5.0mm, 48H 60°C
