Catheterization is an important and essential step in canal preparation.

While manual steel files are necessary for the initial exploration of the canal and determination of the working length (in combination with radiography and ideally apex locator), mechanized catheterization files are particularly useful in cases of canals difficult to access (curved, thin and calcified canals).
They allow catheterization to be carried out more quickly than with manual steel files, more safely by limiting the risk of endodontic errors (stopping, wrong path, deviation from the initial canal trajectory) and more efficiently.
They facilitate the work of the canal shaping instruments which will follow by creating a passage without interference and by ridding the canal of part of its contents.
